So you’re having trouble with your water heater and you are debating whether or not you will attempt a do-it-yourself repair or hire a pro to do the job. Whether you do it yourself or recruit the assistance of and expert depends on a series of factors such as how much appliance repair experience you have (especially pertaining to water heaters) and how big the repair job is.

Your water heater plays a vital role in your home by providing you with a steady supply of hot water. However, the water heater is not one of the first things homeowners will think of when performing routine maintenance around their home. However, maintaining your water heater is vital in ensuring it continues to operate normally. Yet, how will you know when you are in need of water heater repair & maintenance? Here are a few of the signs you can lookout for in your home that can indicate that you are in need of professional water heater repair.

No Hot Water

One of the clearest signs that something is wrong with your water heater is if your water does not get as hot as it used to, or you cannot get any hot water at all. Many homeowners will attribute this problem to a failing water heater, and will automatically assume that they need to have their water heater replaced. However, a burnt out heating element, or a failed pilot light, could be the cause of the problem, and can be professionally repaired. If your water heater is not very old, it may be in your best interest to have it professionally inspected and repaired.

Not Enough Hot Water, or It Takes a Longtime for My Water to Get Hot

Another common problem homeowner’s encounter with their water heater is that their hot water runs out faster than it used to. This is another problem that individuals will attribute to an aging water heater, and they will learn to live with a reduced hot water supply. However, you should not settle for anything less than the best, as this is another problem that can likely be easily repaired. It is possible that mineral deposits, and sediment, at the bottom of your water heater are your blame for this problem. A professional will be able to clean-out your water heater, perform any necessary maintenance and repairs, and get your water heater running efficiently again.

My Water Heater Makes Strange Noises

You may also be able to detect the presence of sediment build-up, and mineral deposits, inside your water heater by the noises your water heater makes. While you are likely familiar with the regular noises your water heater makes while it is operating, you will want to be aware of any unusual noises it may make. If your water heater suddenly begins making loud popping, banging, or gurgling noises, this can be a further indicator of buildup inside your water heater. Either way, these noises are not a good sign, and you will want to have this issue addressed as soon as possible.

Why My Water is Discolored/Black/Rusty?

Have you turned on the hot water in your sink, shower, or bathtub only to notice that the water initially comes out with a reddish-brown tint? If so, then you are in desperate need of water heater repair, as this is likely a sign of corrosion within your water heater. If this corrosion is detected soon enough, it may be repairable. However, if you wait too long to have this issue addressed, then you will likely have to replace your water heater. This makes it vital that you have your water heater inspected, and repaired, as soon as possible upon noticing this sign of corrosion in your water heater.

Since your water heater is an appliance that you rely on on a daily basis in your home, it is important that you have it repaired at the first sign of trouble so that you are not left without hot water in your home. When it comes to having a stranger come into your home to perform maintenance on any aspect of your house, whether it’s a kitchen sink or a water heater in the basement, you want to know that you have picked someone who you can trust and depend on to do an excellent job. If you are in need of a plumber for a water heater installation job specifically, there are certain things you should do to know that you have picked the perfect plumber. In this post, we will review five important questions you should ask so that you can confidently know that you hired the right professional.

How Long Does it Take to Install a Water Heater?

The answer you want to hear is “approximately 2-3 hours for a conventional tank and if you are going for a tankless one it will be a bit longer”. First, your old tank will be removed, which takes about one hour. Then, the new one will be installed by connecting in to the water lines and power sources. If there is a gas unit, it will take more time. Once everything has been safely installed, the water heater will need to be tested and adjusted accordingly in order to ensure that it runs smoothly and efficiently in your home.

Are You Licensed And Insured?

You are setting yourself up for a world of both annoying and serious problems if you hire a plumber who does not have the proper licensing and insurance coverage. If you ask a plumber this and they aren’t licensed and insured, you end up being liable for any damages or injury that happen on the job site. The most reputable plumbers do not put their clients at risk by not being properly licensed and insured. Ask the plumber for this information before hiring and they should happily provide proof of their credentials.

What is The Warranty on This Water Heater Installation?

The answer will vary according to every plumber you ask. Regardless of the answer, you want to make sure you ask this question and get the right information before hiring anyone and planning to install the water heater installation. Warranties are important because you want to know that you can have your water heater fixed or replaced if and when a problem arises. Some plumbers offer lifetime warranties while others offer 20 years. It all depends on the plumber, but you want to make sure you get a warranty that fits your needs and budget.

Should I go With a Conventional Water Heater or one of  those super cool Tankless Water Heaters?

A good plumber, like yours truly, will give you suggestions on which one to choose, but will ultimately leave the decision up to you, obviously. The conventional tank water heather and the newer tankless water heaters are the two major classifications to choose from and you’ll hear people here in Saratoga Springs, Eagle Mtn & Lehi, (at least those are the people I mostly encounter but I’m sure this is true for all of Utah) who swear that the Tankless water heaters are the coolest, and other who hate Tankless because they cost so much and they need more maintenance. Sure, a tankless water heater is a more expensive investment, but will end up saving you money and energy over the period of its lifetime, as long as it lasts 20+ years. With a Tankless you will definitely want to get a water softener or the hard water in our water here in Saratoga, Eagle Mtn and Lehi will destroy it quickly or you’ll ned up calling me over to maintain it ever 6 months. The added perk of the tankless water heater is that you will never take a cold shower again because hot water is on demand, so if this is improtant to you then by all means go for the Tankless. And if you have me install your tankless and your water softener I can discount the installation of them both by $100 ( I also sell water softeners but you can have me just install one if you prefer).

Do You Have References?

This is a question that you want to ask anyone you plan on hiring, especially someone who is installing something into your home. Ask the plumber for references, not just on general jobs they have done, but on water heater installations specifically. When other clients are pleased with their results and have good things to say about the plumber, it is a good indication that you too will be pleased with the job they do.
